MediaTek is reportedly nearing an agreement to become a supplier of WiFi chips for HomePod devices, smart speakers made by Apple. However, the chip manufacturer reportedly turned out to have a higher desire, which is a supplier of modems for the iPhone to come.
Apple is expected to cut Intel as its second major modem supplier – the main one being Qualcomm – and hinted that MediaTek is likely to take over the order.
MediaTek launched a 5G modem in early June. Helio M70 is claimed to be able to reach 5Gbps speed and will be produced by TSMC on 7nm process. The modem will start shipping in 2019, six months ahead of schedule.
MediaTek is reportedly advancing the launch schedule of the 5G modem to lure Apple. However, before the company based in Cupertino, California, USA made the final decision, Apple and MediaTek had to create product roadmaps, technology development and collaboration between the two companies.
