The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced its approval of tariff adjustments for telecom operators in response to prevailing market conditions. This decision aims to address operational cost challenges while maintaining service quality for consumers.

The adjustment, capped at a maximum of 50% of the current tariffs, falls significantly below the over 100% increase requested by some operators. The NCC noted that this decision aligns with its mandate under Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, to regulate and approve tariff rates and charges.

Why the Adjustment?

Telecom tariffs in Nigeria have remained unchanged since 2013, despite significant increases in operational costs for service providers. According to the NCC, the approved adjustments will:

  • Bridge the gap between operational costs and stagnant tariffs.
  • Ensure sustainable investment in telecom infrastructure and innovation.
  • Benefit consumers through improved services, better network quality, enhanced customer support, and wider coverage.

Key Details of the Tariff Adjustment:

  • The adjustment adheres to the tariff bands outlined in the 2013 NCC Cost Study.
  • All requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, following the NCC’s 2024 Guidance on Tariff Simplification.
  • The approved rates reflect ongoing reforms aimed at ensuring industry sustainability and consumer protection.

In addition, the NCC emphasized that this decision was made after comprehensive consultations with stakeholders across the public and private sectors. The Commission remains committed to balancing industry sustainability with consumer interests.
