Qualcomm plans to bring super-fast 5G connectivity to smartphones next year. The chipset processor from the US announced that their latest 5G System-on-Chip (SoC) will be based on a 7nm process.
When paired with the Snapdragon X50, the SoC will enable Qualcomm to create the first 5G mobile platform for mobile devices.
Qualcomm said that they have begun to give access to the newest platform on several smartphone manufacturers to be used on their new generation devices.
“We have worked with OEMs, operators, infrastructure vendors and standardization organizations around the world and are ready to launch the first 5G mobile hotspot by the end of 2018 and smartphones that use the next generation platform from us in the first half of 2019,” said Cristiano Amon, President of Qualcomm, as reported by CNET .
According to him, Qualcomm will provide further information regarding this new platform in the fourth quarter of this year.
When compared to 4G, 5G connectivity promises a much higher speed and lower latency. In addition, 5G is also considered as the basic technology for technological developments such as autonomous cars and Virtual Reality (VR) video streaming.
