Meta, the parent company of Threads, is reportedly testing a Community Notes feature similar to the one on X (formerly Twitter). This new tool will allow users to provide additional context on misleading posts, replacing Meta’s traditional fact-checking system.

What is Community Notes?
The feature, according to a Threads post by developer Alessandro Paluzzi (@alex193a) is currently being tested with some iOS users and lets people:
- Add Context: Users can write notes to clarify or correct potentially misleading content.
- Stay Anonymous: Contributors remain anonymous to promote unbiased input.
- Crowdsource Truth: Notes from users with diverse perspectives help ensure balanced information.
If a note is deemed helpful by others, it will be published alongside the original post for better understanding.
Meta’s New Direction
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced plans to shift the company’s approach to content moderation:
- Less Scanning, More Reporting: Meta will stop proactively scanning for hate speech and reduce restrictions on sensitive topics like immigration and gender.
- Focus on Severe Issues: Automated systems will concentrate on serious violations such as terrorism, child exploitation, scams, and drug-related posts.
- Encouraging Free Speech: Zuckerberg emphasized Meta’s commitment to free expression, describing this change as a response to cultural and political shifts, including the upcoming 2024 U.S. elections.
What’s New on Threads?
- Sharing Features: Users can now share photos and videos without quoting the original post.
- Scheduled Posts: Meta is also testing a feature to schedule posts on Threads.
The Community Notes feature is expected to roll out in phases, starting in the U.S. No timeline has been announced for global availability.
