In recent times, websites ranging from streaming platforms to file-sharing services have been blocked by governments across the world, including Nigeria. These blocks are usually enforced by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) under government directives and are aimed at curbing access to sites deemed harmful, illegal, or inappropriate.

While these measures are intended to protect users and uphold national internet safety standards, some users view them as limitations to their freedom online. Consequently, there’s a growing interest in how to bypass these blocks and regain access to restricted content.

The good news is that blocked websites can still be accessed using a variety of tools and methods. In this article on Naijaknowhow, we’ll show you how to open blocked websites on both mobile phones and PCs using VPNs, SSH tunnels, browser add-ons, web proxies, and private browsers.

Important Notice: Use these tips wisely and only for legitimate purposes. Naijaknowhow Media is not responsible for any misuse of this information (read about the information we provide on our disclaimer page). Make sure you’re not violating any laws in your country when accessing restricted sites.

Method 1: Use a VPN Application

The most popular and safest method to access blocked websites is through a Virtual Private Network (VPN). A VPN works by masking your real IP address and routing your traffic through a secure server in another country. This helps you appear as if you’re browsing from a different location.

Benefits of VPNs:

  • Secure and encrypted connection
  • Bypass geographic and ISP restrictions
  • Protect privacy while browsing

There are free VPN applications to open blocked sites, and besides being free, there are also paid VPN applications that can be tried, for example, NordVPN, etc.

Recommended free VPN apps:

  • Turbo VPN
  • Touch VPN
  • 1.1.1.1 by Cloudflare
  • Samsung Max

Premium VPN apps (for better speed and reliability):

  • NordVPN
  • ExpressVPN
  • CyberGhost VPN

These apps are available on Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS. Simply download the app, choose a server, and turn on the VPN to access previously blocked sites.

Method 2: Use SSH (Secure Shell)

In addition to the VPN application, SSH (Secure Shell) is another secure method to bypass site restrictions. It’s mostly used by developers and tech-savvy users, but it’s also great for anyone who wants an encrypted tunnel to browse securely.

Here’s how to use SSH with KPNTunnel Revolution on Android:

  1. Go to the FastSSH website and choose a server close to your location.
  2. Create an account by filling in your username and password.
  3. Save your SSH credentials (username, password, host/IP).
  4. Install KPNTunnel Revolution from the Play Store.
  5. Open the app, go to Settings, and enable SSH Tunnel.
  6. Input your saved credentials in the relevant fields.
  7. Turn on Auto Reconnect and use www.bing.com as the Pinger URL.
  8. Activate Custom DNS and leave the default values.
  9. Return to the home screen of the app and tap Start to connect.

This method ensures your connection is secure and that you’re able to bypass restrictions effectively.

Method 3: Use a Web Proxy

A web proxy acts as an intermediary between you and the internet. When you use a proxy, your internet requests go through a third-party server that fetches the content on your behalf. This makes it possible to access blocked content even on restricted networks.

How to use a web proxy:

  1. Open your browser and go to www.proxysite.com
  2. Select a proxy server from the drop-down menu.
  3. Type the blocked site’s URL into the search box.
  4. Click Go to start browsing.

Other proxy websites include:

  • KProxy
  • Hide.me Proxy
  • Whoer.net

Note: Web proxies are ideal for quick access, but they may not offer the same level of security or speed as VPNs.

Method 4: Use Chrome or Firefox Browser Extensions

Accessing blocked sites, especially on PC, can also be achieved through browser add-ons or extensions. These tools are easy to install and can be activated with just a click.

Steps for Google Chrome:

  1. Go to the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Search for Browsec VPN or any similar VPN extension.
  3. Click Add to Chrome and confirm the installation.
  4. After installation, click the Browsec icon at the top-right of your browser.
  5. Select a server and activate the VPN toggle.

Steps for Mozilla Firefox:

  1. Visit addons.mozilla.org
  2. Search for AnonymoX and click Add to Firefox.
  3. Confirm the installation and then access the tool from the top-right icon.
  4. Select a server and activate the VPN feature.

These extensions allow you to unblock websites directly within your browser, without installing separate apps.

Method 5: Use a Private Browser

Another great way to access websites that are blocked is to use a special browser with privacy-focused features. Although not always designed specifically for bypassing blocks, many of these browsers include built-in VPNs and encryption tools without having to use a separate application.

Advantages of using private browsers:

  • Built-in VPN support
  • Ad and tracker blocking
  • Data encryption
  • Enhanced anonymity

Popular private browsers with VPN or privacy features:

  • Opera Browser – Offers free, unlimited VPN built-in
  • Aloha Browser – Mobile-focused browser with a powerful VPN
  • Brave Private Browser – Fast, privacy-first browser with Tor and ad-blocking features
  • TOR Browser – Routes traffic through multiple nodes for top-level anonymity

These browsers are available across mobile and desktop platforms, and they can help you bypass regional blocks and stay anonymous online. To access more private browsers, read our post on the top VPN browsers.

Final Thoughts

These are the best ways to access blocked websites on smartphones and computers. Whether you’re using a VPN, an SSH tunnel, a web proxy, a browser extension, or a private browser, each method has its own use case depending on what you need.

Remember: Always stay within the bounds of the law. Do not attempt to access adult or illegal websites, especially if you are underage or live in a country with strict internet policies.

Useful article, you’re doing good work! I used to always use free proxies and other free tools to access blocked sites. However, a few months ago I’ve found out that my email was leaked by one of these free providers, this really made me reevaluate my choices, and I’ve opted to pay for a VPN from then on. After a lot of research I decided to go with Nord VPN, because it seemed like the best value for money.

Yes, there are. You can’t visit some sites outside a particular region.
