Recently, the Swiss state has allowed quite extreme technology. This technology is used as a means of ‘suicide’ for someone who wants to end his life without experiencing pain.
The technology is in the form of a capsule that is only enough for one person. It was explained that the technology caused controversy among some people about the legal way to end life, without going through the process of motivation and mental rehabilitation.
Euthanasia
Euthanasia in Greek known as Thanatos is the practice of removing human or animal life through a method that is considered painless or causes minimal pain, usually by giving a lethal injection.
The law on this matter varies from country to country and often changes as cultural norms change or the availability of medical care or treatment becomes available.
It is known that some countries have legalized euthanasia while in other countries it is considered illegal. Due to the sensitivity of this issue, strict restrictions and procedures are always applied regardless of legal status.
Suicide Capsule
Suicide Pods (Suicide Capsules) are 3D capsules that the user can operate inside. Dubbed “The Sarco Suicide Pods,” the pods were made by Exit International.
Exit International is the company behind the capsule manufacture and continues to support advocating for the legalization of euthanasia. However, one must qualify for death before they decide to end their life.
Dr. Philip Nitschke, the capsule maker said that the aim of the technology is to help people who want to go through the process of dying painlessly.
In addition, Exit International also explained that the procedure for activating the suicide capsule device did not violate any regulations governing medical products, narcotics, dangerous chemicals, or weapons.
“Assisting a competent person to commit suicide through Sarco is not an offence under the Criminal Code,” said Swiss Legal Academic Daniel Hürlimann on behalf of Exit International.
A Series of Questions in the Suicide Capsule
A survey is presented to each user to ensure the decision is their own and not influenced by other factors. Once inside the suicide pod, the user is asked to answer a pre-recorded series of questions and then press a button to start the process.
The suicide capsule will give death to the user in just one minute. Death is through hypoxia and hypocapnia, which happens by reducing the oxygen and carbon dioxide levels.
Reporting from The Independent, the Suicide Capsule technology gives people the opportunity to die relatively painlessly. These capsules can be useful for those who suffer from chronic and long-term illnesses who have no hope of living.
Device-assisted suicide in Switzerland has been legal since 1942. Even in 2019, around 1,300 people committed suicide using the services of euthanasia organizations such as Dignitas and Exit. The most common method is swallowing the capsule which causes a coma before causing death.
