Nigeria Implements Unified Shortcodes for Telecom Operators, Simplifying Services for Users

Nigeria is set to standardize shortcodes across all telecommunications operators starting from May 17, in a move towards harmonization.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will oversee the implementation of a single code for specific transactions among telcos such as MTN, Airtel, 9mobile, and Globacom. This means that regardless of their network service provider, Nigerians will be able to recharge their mobile phones, check credit balances for airtime and data, and access other services using a uniform number. This initiative follows the introduction of Mobile Number Portability (MNP) by the NCC in April 2013, allowing users to switch carriers while keeping their original numbers.

The Association of Licensed Telecom Operators in Nigeria (ALTON), representing telecom operators, expressed support for the policy, stating that it aligns with global regulatory practices and aims to simplify services for Nigerians. The harmonization process will involve running both old and new codes simultaneously until May 17, 2023, after which the old codes will be discontinued.

Here are the harmonised shortcodes:
