The parent company that oversees Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram officially changed its name to Meta Platform Inc, Friday (29/10/2021).
Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg revealed that this name change is one of the aims of realising his future vision, which is to become a metaverse company.
Zuck insists he doesn’t want his company to be known as a social media company but as a technology company.
Actually, there is no specific definition to explain what a “metaverse” is. However, this term is often used to describe a virtual world where you can do activities, meet friends, play games, work, etc., using a Virtual Reality (VR) headset.
According to Mark Zuckerberg, the metaverse will be the future of the internet, which is no longer limited by gadgets such as mobile phones that have small screens and are not three-dimensional (3D).
“Basically you’re going to be able to do everything you can on the internet today as well as some things that just don’t make sense on the internet today, like dancing,” said Zuck.
Previously, Facebook had developed a VR-based office space called Horizon Workrooms. Here, users can conduct virtual meetings using avatars and operate with the Oculus Quest 2 VR headset made by Facebook.
“Metaverse will be the future platform and social experience,” said Zuck, quoted from The Verge.
To realise this vision of the future, Facebook will invest billions of dollars a year to build the metaverse, services, and tools it needs.
