The Lagos State Government has announced a new policy requiring the installation of Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras on all buildings with six floors and above. The initiative, aimed at improving public safety and enhancing security, was revealed by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, in a statement issued by the ministry’s Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Mukaila Sanusi.

According to the commissioner, the mandate applies to both new and existing buildings across the state. Existing buildings of six floors and above, particularly those located on major roads, must comply with the directive. For new and under-construction buildings, installing CCTV cameras will now be a requirement for obtaining planning permits.

Dr. Olumide further emphasized that commercial properties are not exempt from the new regulation. He explained that the initiative aligns with the Lagos State Government’s vision of creating a technologically advanced and well-managed city. The policy is expected to increase surveillance, deter criminal activities, and enhance the overall safety of residents and businesses in Lagos.

The Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority will be responsible for establishing standards for camera systems, ensuring proper maintenance, and conducting inspections to maintain consistency. Property owners will also be required to provide camera footage to security agencies upon request.

The commissioner urged property owners and other stakeholders to support the initiative, describing it as an essential part of the state government’s T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda to help achieve a safer and more secure Lagos for residents.
