In addition to launching three new iPhone models, Apple also presented the latest series from Apple Watch in an event held at the Steve Jobs Theater auditorium, Apple Park, Cupertino, California, USA, Wednesday (12/09/2018) or Thursday early morning hrs (09/13/2018).
The new device is called Apple Watch Series 4, this new smartwatch brings a variety of significant changes compared to its predecessor, especially in terms of design.
The Apple Watch Series 4 comes with a bigger screen with two variants — 40mm and 44mm, which increased from the previous series that carried 38mm and 42mm sizes.
Although the screen is enlarged, the Series 4 is slimmer than the Series 3 because Apple reduces the size of the bezel. In terms of design, this brand-new smartwatch made by Apple has a screen that is 30 percent wider, also thinner than its predecessor.
The watchOS operating system also uses the larger screen to show a variety of more relevant information.
“This latest Apple Watch is equipped with stronger software, which keeps you connected even though you are active in activities,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, on the launch stage.
The Apple Watch Series 4 not only knows the heart rate but also comes with three new features for the heart. First, this smartwatch can bring up notifications when the heart rate is low.
“If the pulse is too low it can’t pump blood throughout the body, and now Apple Watch can detect it,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s Chief Operating Officer, during the presentation.
Apple Watch Series 4 can also record heart rate, and notify users if the heart rate rhythm is not normal.
Not only that, this new smartwatch is also equipped with the ability of Electrocardiography (ECG) to record the electrical activity of the heart using sensors. This feature will notify users if they have heart rate abnormalities.
The gyroscope sensor allows this watch to detect if the user falls. For example, if a user falls from a ladder, then the Apple Watch Series 4 will ask whether to call emergency services. If there is no response and the user does not move for more than 5 seconds, Siri will automatically contact the paramedic.
The interface of the Apple Watch Series 4 is also updated so that it can display photos, maps, and emails. Not only that, the interface is now also able to display four contacts of closest persons and it requires only one tap to connect.
In addition, the interface can also display reminders, such as flight schedules, and display three different time zones at once. Another new feature is a reminder to take a deep breath.
Hardware aspect, Apple Watch Series 4 is equipped with speakers that are 50 percent louder than its predecessor. Apple also moved the microphone on the Series 4 away from the speakers to reduce echo.
On the back, Watch Series 4 is made of black ceramic and sapphire crystal. For processors, this smart watch is equipped with an Apple S4 chipset that matches a 64-bit dual-core CPU and a powerful GPU that makes the performance claimed to be twice as powerful as Series 3.
For privacy matters, Apple says all user health data is encrypted on the device. The battery resistance, which is around 18 hours.
The Apple Watch Series 4 comes in silver, gold and space grey, with the size of the strap that fits the entire Apple Watch of the previous generation.
About the price, the Apple Watch Series 4 starts at US $399 or around N145,000 naira for the GPS variant only and starts at US $499 or around N182,000 naira for variants with LTE cellular capabilities.
The smartwatch will be available on 21 September 2018 in 26 countries, and the cellular variant will be available for 16 countries.
