By now, you should be ready for new buzzwords in this ever-vibrant smartphone universe. Time-of-flight (ToF) sensor is the next big thing in the smart ecosystem. And LG is prepared to jump on it with its next flagship – LG G8 ThinQ.
LG G8 ThinQ is the successor to last year’s released LG G7 ThinQ. The G series represents one of LG’s flagship series that gets unveiled mostly at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Like the other members of the lineup, LG G8 ThinQ will be revealed there but with something new, the ToF sensor.
What’s the ToF sensor?
First off, the ToF is an acronym for Time-of-flight. In some cases, it’s referred to as 3D ToF camera. ToF sensor is implemented in cameras to help produce 3D images and more secure facial recognition feature. It makes use of laser rays to calculate the distance between the object and camera. That way, it improves AR and VR applications with the aid of the 3D image execution.
The bandwagon…
Earlier, I stated that LG would be joining manufacturers that have the ToF sensor in the works. Huawei Honor View 20 works with this ToF camera. The 3D ToF camera is what teams up with View 20’s rear 48MP.
Oppo R17 Pro is also loaded with the feature at its rear segment. Added to this, Vivo is said to be working on perfecting the 3D ToF sensor for its device. So, we could be seeing a Vivo smartphone with ToF camera anytime soon.
LG G8 ThinQ’s use of ToF
The Korean maker, LG integrated the ToF sensor in the selfie arena; therefore, selfies will be produced in 3D modes. When the phone gets unveiled at the MWC in Barcelona on February 24, it will be the first phone to use the 3D ToF in the selfie region.
A German company, Infineon is the company supplying LG with the technology. For more specifics, they’ll be using Infineon’s REAL3 image sensor chip.
Asides the ToF camera, the only speculation about the LG G8 ThinQ is the likelihood of Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 as the powering chipset. If that comes true, the possibility of 5G can’t be exempted from LG G8 ThinQ’s features.
