Huawei reportedly submitted an order for a 6.9-inch AMOLED panel to Samsung Display, according to a recent report from South Korea.
According to the source, this screen order is intended for use on devices launching in the fourth quarter of this year or first quarter of 2019.
Considering the launch time, one of the devices is suspected to be the Huawei Mate 20 because the Mate series is usually launched in Q4 every year. The panel in question will be flat, not curved.
If the Huawei Mate 20 will be coming with a 6.9-inch screen, it will easily win screen size battles between the high-end flagship classes.
For comparison, Galaxy Note 9 reportedly will use a 6.38-inch panel, and the latest iPhone will also have a 6.46-inch screen.
The reason for Huawei’s surprise move seems to be related to the market in which Huawei originated. Chinese consumers prefer a bigger screen for their smartphones, possibly because of Chinese writing characters that require more space.
In fact, the upcoming 6.46-inch iPhone later this year has also been developed with Chinese consumers in mind, and Huawei does not want to let US companies penetrate its territory, an unnamed source said.
