Samsung is expected to introduce the Galaxy Z Flip in the Galaxy Unpacked event to be held in San Francisco, USA, on the 11th February. In the event, the South Korean tech giant was also said to be launching its Galaxy S20 smartphone line.

It was rumoured that the Galaxy Z Flip was not actually the successor to the Galaxy Fold folding screen smartphone that was released last year. Galaxy Fold allegedly will have its own successor which will be launched in the second quarter of 2020.

That is, the successor to Galaxy Fold – call it Galaxy Fold 2 – is expected to be released in the middle of the year or around April to June 2020.

Different from the Galaxy Z Flip which uses a clamshell design or more similar to the concept of the fold on the Motorola Razr, the Galaxy Fold 2 will be more like its predecessor with a screen model that is bent on a vertical axis like a book closing motion.

Rumours regarding the specifications of Galaxy Fold 2 were revealed by gadget leakers and XDA Developer contributor, Max Weinbach, through his personal Twitter account.

In a tweet, he said that the diagonal screen of Galaxy Fold 2 is 8 inches when stretched, longer than the Galaxy Z Flip which has a diagonal of 6.7 inches in the same position.

The screen will be coated with an ultra-thin glass layer, instead of polyamide plastic-like last year’s Galaxy Fold. In addition, the Galaxy Fold 2 will also be equipped with a 108MP resolution main camera and S-Pen stylus pen.

Quoting GSM Arena, Galaxy Fold 2 is also said to be relying on the Snapdragon 865 chipset that has the 5G feature.

It is still unknown whether Samsung will name the folding screen smartphone Galaxy Fold 2 or adopt another name.

Most likely, the price of the Galaxy Fold 2 will also be more expensive than the Galaxy Z Flip. The official price is said to be closer to the first generation Galaxy Fold.

The latest rumours predict the Galaxy Z Flip will sell for US $800 to US $900 (around ₦290,000 to ₦326,000 naira). This price is far adrift with last year’s Galaxy Fold release which was sold at ₦825,000 (Check offer on Jumia Nigeria).
