HONOR 20 Series Official: Three Attractively Priced Devices

HONOR, the subsidiary brand of Huawei, was yesterday on stage for the first time in 2019 to launch new products: the HONOR 20 series. In total it concerns three devices, which will serve as successors for the HONOR 10 and the HONOR View 20, which appeared at the end of 2018.

As with every launch of a HONOR device, the focus here is on the young audience. The device has a number of distinctive aspects for this, including the specific colours: the HONOR 20 comes in Midnight Black and Sapphire Blue, while the HONOR 20 Pro appears in Phantom Blue and Phantom Black. In the end, the price is the most important, with 599 euros (approx. N241,000 naira) for the top model.

HONOR 20 and HONOR 20 Pro

Let’s start with the screen of the HONOR 20 and HONOR 20 Pro; this is a 6.26-inch LCD panel with a Full-HD + resolution. HONOR indicates that the screen has a screen-to-body ratio of 91.7 percent. These figures are the result of the omission of a notch.

Just like with the HONOR View20, this is not present on the device. Just like with the Samsung Galaxy S10 series, a ‘hole-punch display’ is used, allowing the camera to capture the image for your selfies. Incidentally, you take selfies with the 32 MP sensor that is located in the front in the 4.5 mm ‘hole punch’, this sensor is helped by AI software from HONOR.

Honor 20 PRO

In terms of computing power, it is certainly not disappointing with the HONOR 20 and 20 Pro, since there is a HiSilicon Kirin 980 SoC. The same SoC was also included in the high-end Huawei P30 Pro, which was announced earlier this year. In terms of RAM and storage memory, the HONOR 20 Pro gives you 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, surprisingly much considering the price point of the device. The normal HONOR 20 receives 6GB RAM and 128GB storage memory.

As for the battery, it has a 4,000 mAh capacity and can be charged with a maximum of 22.5 watts. In terms of software, the HONOR 20 series runs on EMUI 9.1 based on Android 9.0 Pie. Given the recent debacle of the Huawei, it will be more difficult for the manufacturer to roll out new versions of Android, but updates will continue to roll out for the time being.

Honor 20 PRO

Then one important part remains to discuss and that is the camera. In the case of the HONOR 20 and 20 Pro, there are quite a few, in addition to the selfie camera, there are four more on the back. It starts with a 48 MP sensor on the rear, with an unprecedented f / 1.4 aperture in the Pro model. We have never seen such a large lens on a smartphone before. The non-pro model must make do with an f / 1.8 aperture.

Furthermore, there is a 16 MP camera with a 117-degree wide – angle lens in both models. In the case of the HONOR 20 Pro, an 8 MP telephoto camera (3x optical zoom) is added, while the non-pro has a 2MP sensor to measure depth. Finally, there is a 2 MP sensor for both photos for macro photos.

Prices and availability

All devices will be available somewhere in June at different channels. In terms of prices, the HONOR 20 will be in store for 499 euros (approx. N200k naira), while you can pay 599 euros (approx. N241k naira) for the HONOR 20 Pro.

Whether or not you would like to purchase a device from the brand after the problems with Huawei is something you should decide for yourself. Huawei has already announced that it will do its utmost to provide the devices, as everyone in the company is accustomed, with the latest security patches. The state of Android upgrades is still unknown.
